Reimagining the Osprey

Artist David Plunker relies on patterns and visual storytelling from the original to inspire his own creation.

Even as a young boy, David Plunkert was a John James 探花精选 fan. When he was 10 he bought an 探花精选 book for his mother鈥檚 birthday, then reclaimed it for himself.

He likes J.J.鈥檚 style because it blends science and art, he says. Even though the paintings are based on scientific observations, each one is an illustrated narrative: Something is going to happen.

At first Plunkert, who鈥檚 from Baltimore, considered choosing the raven, but he opted to reimagine the osprey because 鈥渋t looks ferocious flying, and it鈥檚 got a fish. I love the fish鈥檚 expression鈥攊t sort of mirrors the osprey.鈥

The lines of the osprey were another attraction, he added, since his personal style tends to be strongly driven by his sense of geometry and pattern. 鈥淚 could translate that into my own work, kind of visualizing the osprey as a turn-of-the-century weather vane.鈥
