Love the Hit Game Wordle? Try BRDL, a Bird-Inspired Spinoff

The daily word quiz that has taken the internet by storm now has a version for birders. Just make sure you know your banding codes.

If you've spent more than five minutes online this听month, you've likely听either played Wordle or seen people sharing the results of their games. At听this moment, that 6x5听grid of tiles seems听virtually inescapable.听

For those who have somehow entirely avoided the game听up to this point,听here's听the gist:听 is a word-guessing puzzle听that gives you six听tries听to guess a five-letter mystery word using the process of elimination. Correct letters placed in the correct tiles are marked green, and correct letters in the wrong tiles听are yellow. Completely wrong letters are grayed out.听On each听attempt, reshuffle and replace听accordingly. Sounds simple, right? It can be鈥攁nd yet, it听can also be surpringly difficult!听Either way, Wordle is听a whole heap of fun, and each day a new word provides a fresh challenge.听You can learn more about听Wordle's creator and the game's backstory听.听

Perhaps unsurprisingly,听Wordle and its popularity have听already inspired a slew of spinoffs. In fact, there's now one for the four-letter banding codes, or alpha codes, researchers use as shorthand for species' names鈥攁nd it just so happened听to be designed by 探花精选's听very own graphic designer听Alex Tomlinson. Launched this week, BRDL has听received rave reviews on 探花精选 Slack听and听, so听try your hand below听to see if you can deduce which听banding code is the mystery code of the day. If you're听like most people听and don't know your听banding codes by heart, here's . You can also find a quick tutorial on how they work below.听

Once you know your听North American codes and start acing听BRDL on the daily, it might be time for a new challenge. In that case, we suggest听looking across the pond; BRDL itself听has already been modified听by Rob Robinson听of听the British Trust for Ornithology to feature the five-letter British banding codes. His version is听called 听a reference to the British听use of ring instead of band. So file that one away with boot, and lift, and bumbershoot, and all those other wonderful Britishisms.听

How does Alex feel about BRDL's speedy success and its very own spinoff? "It is so surreal!" he told me over Slack. "I had no idea such a niche thing would be so popular!"听

How Do the BRDL Banding Codes Work?听

In North America,听banding codes can be听either four or听six letters. There are actually multiple sets of four-letter codes, but we won't get into all that here. Let's just say that the world of banding codes is听nuanced and delightfully听pedantic, so听you should definitely听 about it听when you have a moment. (For folks听in the know and worried about those notorious "collisions," Alex plans to avoid them for now.) The听key point to remember for BRDL is that the and they depend on a specific set of rules, as outlined below.听

When the name is one word, the code is simply the first four letters.

BOBOlink
OSPRey
GYRFalcon

When the name is two words, which is frequently the case in the bird world, the code features the听first two letters of each word.听

Mourning听Dove
Great听Egret
Common听Nighthawk

With three words, things get a little trickier. Here, the code consists of the听first letter听from each of the first two words, and the first two letters of the third.听

Great听Blue听HEron
Clay-Colored听SParrow

However, when a听hyphen is at the end of a three-word name, as seen below, then you use the first two letters from the first name and the first letter from each of the second names

FLorida听Scrub-Jay

Finally, when the name is four words, the code is the first letter of each one regardless of hyphens.听

Eastern听Whip-Poor-Will
Gray-Crowned听Rosy-Finch
Wedge-Rumped听Storm-Petrel

Got all that? Okay, good. Happy BRDLing!听听
