So, Apparently Some Woodpeckers Like to Eat the Brains of Baby Birds

Yes, you read that correctly. And there's video evidence.

In case you've聽been wondering, now we know: Woodpeckers will sometimes聽eat the brains of baby聽birds. They sure will. And not only that, but they聽will drill their way to the good stuff with vigor.

This disturbing yet fascinating聽revelation comes by聽way of , where聽writer (and 探花精选 contributor)聽Jason Bittel investigated a YouTube video posted in 2015. The clip聽shows聽a Gila Woodpecker pecking through the skulls of two Mourning Dove chicks to feast on their聽brains and blood.聽(The video is below, but be warned: It's graphic.)聽

According to the story, the footage聽was originally taken by an ornithologist studying the breeding habits of聽birds. The woodpecker, however,聽had different plans.聽To find out more about this聽surprising聽behavior,聽Bittel talked聽to several bird experts, including 探花精选's聽Geoff LeBaron. While LeBaron hadn't seen or heard of such behavior from Gilas聽before, another聽researcher who studies woodpeckers told Bittel that he had. In fact, he's also seen Red-bellied聽and Red-headed Woodpeckers dine on聽other birds. Turns聽out,聽woodpeckers are not discriminating eaters.聽

While the video is shocking, what's going on here is simply nature.聽Birds are living things, and all living things need food. Where and how聽they get that food聽doesn't matter. We know some聽birds eat聽other birds, and our video聽last year showing聽a Bald聽Eagle nabbing an Osprey chick from a聽nest went viral.聽What makes this specific account so cringe-inducing聽is the defenselessness of the chicks. Well, that and the force with which the woodpecker strikes their skulls before lapping up聽everything inside. But聽hey, nature.聽

If you can handle it, we definitely recommend checking out the , which explores the behavior and how it might聽have evolved more in-depth. It's a聽fascinating聽and fun聽read.
