Voting has begun for 探花精选 California鈥檚 2012 Bird of the Year, which will recognize a California bird species of conservation interest that made a significant impact this year. All members of the public are encouraged to cast their votes online on 探花精选 California鈥檚 website at through December 7.
探花精选 California established the contest three years ago to highlight the state鈥檚 remarkable birds and the conservation challenges many of them face. Voters named the Yellow-billed Magpie the 2009 Bird of the Year, the Barn Own won the title in 2010, and last year鈥檚 winner was the California Condor.
鈥淏irds are the one form of wildlife people see every day,鈥 said Brigid McCormack, 探花精选 California鈥檚 managing director. 鈥淥ur hope is to allow the public to celebrate their favorite species and become involved in our conservation efforts to protect all California birds.鈥
Although the public can vote for any bird, 探花精选 California has nominated seven species in particular:
- Burrowing Owl
- Golden Eagle
- Western Snowy Plover
- Tricolored Blackbird
- Sandhill Crane
- Yellow Warbler
- Black Oystercatcher
鈥淲hat鈥檚 special about 探花精选 is our strong network of chapters and volunteers working to protect our most vulnerable birds,鈥 said McCormack. 鈥淭his past year, every bird on this list was supported by an 探花精选 conservation effort.鈥
